Egypt's main exports are petroleum and petroleum products, cotton and cotton textiles, farm produce, cotton clothing, and aluminum products. Egypt's main trading partners have been the U.S., Italy, France, Greece, Germany, Great Britain and Japan.
The country's trade deficit continues to worsen, with an annual $3.5 billion of exports against $10.5 billion in imports. Egypt must import wheat, flour, meat, other food products, machinery and automotive vehicles, iron, steel, food products, paper products and chemicals.
Cairo, Alexandria, Helwan and the new industrial cities outside Cairo are modern Egypt's main industrial areas, producing iron and steel, textiles, refined petroleum, plastics, building materials, electronic products, paper, automobiles and chemicals.
Apart from textiles, most industrial products are made for local consumption.
